How to get rid of frizzy hair

If you have frizzy hair you don’t have to accept it and think it’s your natural texture. The right hair care can help you control it, and eventually be frizz-free. It’s very frustrating when your hair is frizzy, even if you just washed it. So, how do you get rid of frizzy hair? First, what is frizz? Frizzy hair means that your hair is dehydrated and dry. The hair cuticle will rise if it’s dehydrated or damaged to try to get some moisture back in. Frizzy hair also could be a result of damaged hair. You can read it here about how to help your damaged hair.

It all starts with balance diet and hydrating your body, beauty from within just like my grandma says. That being said, you’re probably wonder if there is anything else you can do to help your hair be smooth and prevent frizz. There are many options to help your hair to get hydrated from outside to that won’t break the bank. We’ll help you to get your frizz under control! Here are some options to try, but, as per usual consistence is a key. I put together a list based on what worked with my clients and what I’ve personally tried. Plus, my advice is applicable at home as well.

Short Answer

Frizzy hair craves for moisture. Try putting back moisture to your hair by using oils and treatments like hair masks.

1. Oil

Oil is a great way to add moisture back into your hair. Oil has been used in the beauty industry for many centuries. There are different kinds of oils, some are heavier than others. To me, this only means that I have more options to choose from. If you choose coconut oil or olive oil, or my favorite Aragon oil, you can’t go wrong. It’s just a matter of how you’re planning to use it.

My favorite way? Apply lighter oils on the ends of your hair every night so it can absorb overnight, and your hair will not be oily in the morning. Then, use heavier oils like coconut oil or olive oil 30 min before washing your hair. If you would like some better smelling, some companies developed pre-wash oils which I also genuinely use myself. Also, I don’t think it takes extra time of my busy day. I apply prewash oil when I get up, then continue with my morning routine, which usually includes a workout. Then, I take a shower where I wash both my hair and my hard-earned sweat.

2. Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is well known for restoring moisture in our skin, so why not use it on our hair? Since aloe vera is a gel consistency, you might want to use a carrier oil like castor or coconut oil. Aloe vera is great for all hair types and acts as a deep conditioner. It also has great benefits for your scalp and promotes healthy hair growth. It’s hard to go wrong with aloe vera when it has more than 75 nutrients.

How should you use Aloe Vera on your HAIR? I know it sound strange because it has a gel consistency, and it smells earthy. I recommend using it as a pre-wash treatment. Apply on your hair as much you think is reasonable, you can also apply on your scalp if your scalp needs attention, then leave it in for 20-30 min and continue with your hair wash routine. You will not be left with aloe vera smell or its consistency in your hair. No one needs to know. Right? I can go on about the benefits of Aloe Vera and the ingredients it contains, but I will challenge you just to try it and see how good it will feel after it.

3. Squeeze To Dry Your Hair

After your shower, avoiding aggressive towel drying will make a huge difference in how your hair will look after it is dry. The coarse texture of the towel can ruff up the hair cuticle. Using a microfiber towel to gently squeeze the water out of your hair can fix this. Even a T-shirt would work great to for squeezing the water out! Squeeze out the water from your hair gently till your hair is not dripping any more. If you have longer hair, you can wrap it up and let the water absorb.

When I teach my clients about the importance of squeezing the wet hair vs ruff drying it I try to compare it with the silk. I ask them to imagine a silk and being vigorously trying to dry with a towel. How do you think the silk will look after it? The answer is always “frizzy”. Now, I continue, how much work you think will take to smooth out the silk after it? I can see my clients’ wheels turning. Then why we are doing it with our hair that is in most fragile state? The big secret to a great professional blow dry is the correct “hair prep”, and not having the hair being rafted up before drying can contribute to that success.

4. Fenugreek Seeds

This is a very old but effective home remedy for dry hair. Fenugreek seeds are rich in iron, potassium, calcium, protein, and lecithin. It’s beneficial to your scalp and hair health, fights dandruff, promotes hair growth, and makes your hair shiny and smooth. As you can see, these tiny seeds can solve almost all your hair problems and you might just end up with thick and shiny hair.

Fenugreek oil is best known for hair growth benefits and many studies backed up those claims that fenugreek seed can increase hair thickness and growth. You can read more about “natural hair growth” in our post here. The reason I included Fenugreek seeds on a list to help you fight frizzy hair is because Fenugreek has protein and amino acids. That helps to repair and hydrate your damaged hair. The healthier your hair isa, the less frizz you will have to tame.

5. Don’t Over Wash It

Over washing it will strip natural hair oil called sebum. When your hair is frizzy it already lacks moisture, so we try to preserve as much moisture as we can. When you do wash your dry hair, moisturizing shampoo and conditioner would be best. It doesn’t mean you will stick with the same shampoo once your hair is in better shape, but in the meantime, just concentrate on getting the moisture back. Also, grab some dry shampoo in-between your washes. My favorite way to use dry shampoo is to apply it on clean hair. Especially before I go to sleep, the dry shampoo will absorb all the oils before it even started to make your hair appear greasy. An extra tip would be don’t wash your hair with hot water. Nothing wrong to enjoy your shower but keep in mind that hot water cause frizz for your hair.

6. Leave in Treatment

Leave in treatment is a great way to close your cuticle and lock in moisture in your hair after a wash. Depending on your hair type, just make sure the product is not too heavy. Product choice will be very individual. I would just strongly recommend applying in your mid-shaft to ends so that way your scalp will stay clean and free of products. Just like I mentioned in a previous point that over washing it will lead to over drying your hair. Keeping your clean scalp free of products that could weight down your hair like the leave in treatment can reverse what we are trying to accomplish. I also recommend alternating the leave in treatments because each will have different beneficial ingredients.

Final Thoughts

There are couple causes for hair to frizz, one is humidity in your environment, hair damage either done from heat styling or coloring, and some have naturally more frizz because the hair is curly and natural oils can travel far on the hair to moisturize it. The bottom line is that dryness causes the cuticle to rise and look for moisture. Will it be possible to tame your frizz? I really hope so. Can you always tame it 100%? Not if environment doesn’t allow it, but that doesn’t mean you can’t tame it 80%. Once you understand what causes the frizz, I strongly believe you will have a better handle your frizzy hair.
