Winter is coming! But what does that mean for your hair? The cold weather can be harsh and unforgiving to your hair. Especially since the temperature outside is cold, and when you are inside it is warm and dry. Just like how skin becomes drier during colder months, so does your hair. This sensation can occur from both cold air and central heating.

7 Winter Hair Care Tips for Healthy Shiny Hair

With the right hair care tips there is a way to protect your hair during the winter months. By giving your hair a little more TLC and consistency, you will have strong, smooth, healthy, and shiny hair, even during the winter. I have prepared a winter hair care survival guide. You will be able to avoid split ends, static, and dry hair.

1. Do Not Leave the House with Wet Hair

As it is, hair is the most fragile when wet. I understand that we don’t always have time to air dry it. Wet hair in cold will act just like water. It will freeze, which will cause hair breakage. You don’t want to put a hat on a wet hair either. The moisture from wet hair and the heat from your scalp underneath your hat will create the perfect condition for fungus. Ewww. If you must, use a blow dryer when needed just put it on a low heat setting. However, the best option would be to air dry your hair. Style your hair either in a braid or a loose bun so it won’t be too exposed to elements.

2. Deep Conditioner

Just like how winter requires a thicker body lotion, hair also requires thicker products. Switch your hair conditioner to a thicker and creamier one during winter months. If you can spend an extra minute in your day, leave your conditioner just a bit longer before rinsing it out. That way all the wonderful ingredients you paid for will have time to penetrate to your hair. It is best if you apply conditioner, especially a heavier one, on your ends and mid-shaft. That way your hair does not get too greasy too soon. Otherwise, it would defeat the whole purpose. Because washing to often dries your hair. You can even make your own treatment. 3. Oil on Scalp

Your scalp is the skin on top of your head where hair grows. Just like how the skin on your body gets drier during winter, so does your scalp. During winter times or when you feel your scalp dry, you can do a pre-shampoo treatment with oil. You can choose hot oil treatment and start at your scalp. Then take some time and massage it in. A massage will even stimulate blood circulation. My favorite option is olive oil for this. After massaging into your scalp, you can also put some on your ends. Leave it on for 20-30 min and then proceed with a hair wash. Most likely you will need to shampoo it twice before applying a conditioner. It depends on the environment you live in, but this treatment would be great couple times a month.

4. Wear a Hat

Hats are a great way to protect your hair from all elements. During cold winter months, a hat will protect your hair from dry air, wind, rain, or snow. Besides, hats are a nice way of expressing your style. The best way to wear a hat without causing hair damage? Try wrapping your hair in a silk scarf before you put your hat on.

5. Healthy Diet

One of my favorite sayings is “beauty is from within”. During cold winter months, our immune system tends to weaken. Besides we spend more time inside during winter and that results in less Vitamin D for us. We can put all the best kind of products on our hair but that’s only treating the hair from outside. The hair growth is from inside, so it matters how we nourish ourselves. Including plenty of fruits, vegetable, proteins, and whole grains is a great start to help boost your immune system. Nourishing your body with the right nutrients is the best way to go about achieving healthy hair growth. Following a balanced diet to keep your body and hair healthy is essential. 6. Hair Oil

Hair oils are one of the best ways to put moisture back into your hair. As you can see, the lack of moisture is one of the most consistent issues we need to solve. There are many ways to add oils to your winter hair care routine. One of my favorites is to put a couple drops of argan oil on my hair ends before I go to bed. That way, it will have plenty of time to absorb into hair without leaving it feeling oily. This oil been used for ages and has been a beauty secret for many. It is rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Adding a simple step just by adding hair oil has so many benefits and takes very little effort and time to do it.

7. Trim the Split Ends

The only way to get rid of split ends is to get trim them. You can follow this link here and read about how often you should trim your hair in general. Getting regular trims will maintain your hair health and avoid from getting dry and split ends.

Final Thoughts

Winter can really take a toll on your hair by extracting the moisture out – result in frizz and dryness. You should treat your hair like cashmere sweater, especially during cold months. Maintaining moisture is the main goal during these winter months. A balanced diet and some protection, with added treatment, will have you all ready for cold weather.
