5 DON'T S FOR YOUR HAIR

We are all in a rush, and we don’t always have the time to slow down and take care of ourselves as we should. I get it! I am a busy mom, wife, daughter, sister, friend, and I work full time plus, working on this blog. Some people have figured out how to lead an effortless life. I am learning to stress less and really do one thing at the time. 5 Don’t s for your hair

When it comes to your hair care routine, it’s important to have the right one for you. (You can find all sorts of information in these articles) I put together a list with important steps that we should NOT do with our hair. It may seem tedious at first, but when you read my reasoning, I promise it will be worth changing your habits. Some of your everyday habits might be wrecking your hair, without even realizing it. You can easily avoid these mistakes by following these 5 dont’s for your hair.

DON’T #1

Rubbing Wet Hair

After a relaxing shower, once you rinse out all your favorite products and implement your fool-proof hair routine, don’t ruin your clean and hydrated hair by vigorously drying your hair with a towel. When you do this, you leave your hair cuticle open, creating frizz and fragile hair that becomes even more vulnerable. Then, you comb out the knots the vigorous drying created, leading to more breakage and split ends. At the end of the day, nothing good can come from aggressive towel drying. Instead, try using a microfiber towel and just squeeze the water out from your hair. (Pss, an old t-shirt would work great to)!

DON’T #2

Hot Water

Although hot showers can be extremely relaxing, our hair hates hot showers. Using hot water on your scalp will strip your natural oils and dehydrate your hair. When this moisture escapes your hair, it will be dry and frizzy. However, if you wash your hair with warm water, your scalp will cleanse and remove any dirt or product buildups. After, apply your conditioner or hair mask and attend to your other showers needs. Once the conditioner or mask has sat for a couple of minutes, adjust the water as cold as you can handle, and rinse out your product. In the big picture, this only takes a minute of the entire duration of the shower, however, the effects benefit your hair tremendously. Cold water closes the hair cuticle and pores in the scalp. Not to mention, it will add a shine to your hair and will lock in moisture.

DON’T #3

High Heat

I don’t think most know the heat on hot tools can damage hair without repair. Just because a flat iron can go all the way to 450F, it doesn’t mean you should. Especially if you have colored hair and want to curl or straighten your hair almost daily, the hair won’t be able to handle it. If you do choose to use a hot tool, use a heat protector, and turn the temperature down. In the long run, these small adjustments will be very beneficial for your hair. When using heat for styling I strongly recommend using a heat protecting spray. Essentially, it’s like sunscreen for your hair. Not only will it shield you from the heat, but it will also help you get a smoother and shiner result. Win win! I love this product because it does exactly just that.

DON’T #4

Washing Too Much

While shampooing hair, your scalp is being washed of a natural oil called sebum. When you wash your hair too often, your hair becomes dry and brittle, leading to more damage. However, if washing your hair daily is habitual, then try training your hair. Start by washing every other day, and slowly continue until you can wash your hair every couple of days. This might take some adjustment, but I highly recommend dry shampoo to help extend your washing schedule.

DON’T #5

Conditioning All Your Hair

I am a strong believer in conditioner and hair masks. However, products such as these are designed for your mid-shaft to ends on your hair. Applying conditioner to your scalp will make your hair oily faster, leading to more washing. Besides, the end of our hair is the oldest, some long hair could be 5-7 years old. The ends need more moisture. At the end of the day, balance is key, and hair is no different. Another idea I tell my clients about is to use wide tooth comb while you have conditioner in. This will help keeping your conditioner in longer and smooth your hair at the same time, which will lead to less styling time after washing it.

Final Thoughts

There are so many more hair dont’s that I could write about. For example, going to sleep with your hair wet, or wrong brush choices, or putting your wet hair in a ponytail. But the purpose of this article was to give you some basic daily habits you can change to improve your hair health. I wanted to keep it simple and reachable goals. For more tips click here!
