5 TIPS FOR HEALTHY HAIR
Bad hair days are not the best days! I certainly have been there, frustrated with my hair performance and appearance. Then, I scroll on social media and everyone else hair looks amazing. I think we are all guilty of comparing ourselves to social media, beating ourselves up for our appearance. Healthy-looking skin, hair, and bodies are the current beauty standard – and for good reason. As a third-generation hairstylist, I believe hair is the first step to feeling more confident in your appearance. Regardless of your hair color choice or your texture, hair is most beautiful when healthy. From experience, I put together some simple 5 tips for healthy hair that you can start with today.
1. Don’t Wash It Every Day
Washing your hair every day strips your scalp of natural oils that your body produces to keep your hair healthy and prevent dryness. When you wash your hair too often, the hair cuticle opens and closes, and it will cost the hair to frizz. By skipping your hair wash, showers will be shorter. Not to mention, you will end up saving water, which will help our planet and work towards the drought problems. All in all, washing your hair every day is detrimental to your hair health. It is a process for your hair to adjust from not getting washed as often. It will take a couple of weeks to train your hair. However, your hair will appreciate it and begin to take longer to become greasy since it knows it won’t be washed as often. You will get full benefits from natural hair sebum. 2. Deep Conditioner
This is especially for people who have dry hair. A couple of reasons that your hair could be dry is due to using too much heat on your hair from styling tools. A consistent routine of heat causes lots of damage to your hair, therefore resulting in dry hair. Another way your hair could be dry is if your scalp doesn’t produce enough sebum (just one more reason not to wash your hair daily). A deep conditioner is a lot more concentrated than just a conditioner. It stays longer on your hair before rinsing it out (usually 20-30 min). It’s used instead of a regular conditioner right after shampoo, usually recommended once a week. I recommend washing your hair twice before applying deep conditioner so it can penetrate into your hair better. Deep conditioner treatment is one of the easiest ways for your hair to get healthier. I recommend UNITE Hair 7 Seconds Masque for your deep conditioning needs.
3. Turn the Heat Down
Sadly, I think no one wants to admit that you can actually sizzle your hair with hot styling tools. However, through years of experience I have found simple yet effective ways to prevent heat damage. I would rather you take smaller sections of your hair, enabling the heat to penetrate your hair more effectively, rather than high heat and thicker sections. It may take a couple more seconds longer to style your hair, but it will be able to stay healthier for much longer. To maximize your hair’s health, there is a certain process you should go through with your hot tools. First, make sure your hair is completely dry. Then, apply heat protection and lower the heat of your tool. Lastly, style your hair by taking smaller sections. This way, your hair can prioritize health, as well as the style you want to achieve. I highly recommend Living proof Perfect Hair Day Heat Styling Spray.
4. The Right Products
It’s very important to choose the right hair products for your hair especially when you are trying to get it healthy. There are so many options out there for consumers and it can get confusing. Asking your professional hairstylist for a recommendation is a good place to start. Trust me, stylists love teaching their clients, especially when their client is interested. They can guide you in the right direction tailored to your specific hair needs. Plus, there are plenty of product dupes if the products are out of price range! Just like your skin needs the right routine, your hair is no different. With the right hair routine you will get your hair healthier much faster.
5. Dry Shampoo
Dry shampoo is a game changer, especially when going a couple days without washing your hair. Simply put, it’s a powder that helps to absorb oils produced from the scalp. The commercial dry shampoo was invented in the 1940s, but powders to absorb oil on the hair and wigs were used way back in the 1700s. Dry shampoos offer many more options for people, such as skipping a hair wash day, freshening up after a gym session, or adding volume. Dry shampoo is not a replacement for washing our hair, but is a nice option in between washes. In fact, when we skip a few washes, our scalp naturally produces oil to moisturize and rehydrate the hair, which is extremely healthy for it. Dry shampoo helps to preserve your natural hair oil while avoiding a “greasy” look. My favourite dry shampoo is Amika Perk Up Talc-Free Dry Shampoo.
